The True Purpose of Government: We-the people who are here living and working and making this state what it is-want to fairly and adequately address our budget's structural deficit, and we want a leader who invests in Kentuckians' ability to move forward with the rest of the country. By Dana Beasley-Brown, KFTC member. Louisville Courier-Journal (2/14/07)
Raise the Minimum Wage: State should not wait for federal law to do right. Opinion by Rev. Nancy J. Kemper, KY Council of Churches. Lexington Herald-Leader (2/21/07)
Make Minimum Wage Rise Automatically Each Year: Efforts are under way in the federal and state legislatures to increase the minimum wage to at least $7 an hour. That's a great start, but the Lexington Living Wage Campaign asserts that a local family needs at least 115% of the federal poverty level to make ends meet. Only an annual increase in the minimum wage will keep our state's working poor from falling further and further behind. By Jack Burch Lexington Herald-Leader (2/12/07)
State of the Commonwealth Not So Good for the Poor: Imagine if one of the voiceless people in our state -- one of the 680,000 citizens living in poverty -- gave the speech instead of the governor. It might sound something like this:"My fellow Kentuckians, the state of the commonwealth is troubling." Rep. Jim Wayne, Lexington Herald-Leader (2/6/07)
Students Demand Lower Tuition, Better Facilities: College students from across Kentucky rallied in the state capitol rotunda to raise awareness of issues of importance to them. Listen to Tony McVeigh's report on WEKU. (2/08/07)
More Than One Solution: As a sociologist, I am always astounded when someone suggests that helping the poor is an either-or proposition, as in economist Ken Troske's suggestion that Kentucky must choose between an Earned Income Tax Credit or a higher minimum wage. Letter to the Editor from Sue Pitt Greer, Jackhorn. Lexington Herald-Leader (2/4/07)
Taxing Education: Retiring Economic Development Sec. Gene Strong was right in saying that "when you're trying to attract knowledge-based, new economy jobs" it's "just unacceptable" for Kentucky to rank 49th among 50 states in the percentage of college graduates. Too bad Gov. Ernie Fletcher and the "no new tax" legislators don't share that view. What we've seen in recent years are dramatic budget cuts to education. Letter to the Editor from Steve Boyce, Berea. Lexington Herald-Leader (12/24/06)
Tax Cuts and Prosperity. As the noise from Frankfort quiets and legislators return home, I hope Kentuckians will greet them with pointed questions about the future of our commonwealth. Opinion by Janet Tucker, KFTC. Louisville Courier-Journal (7/5/06)
